We wanted to share a bit about a beer style that has been making waves recently: the West Coast Pilsner. It’s an intriguing blend that combines the crispness of a traditional pilsner with the bold hop character of a West Coast IPA. The result? A perfect combination for someone who wants a little more from their classic pilsner.
A Bit of Backstory:
The origins of the West Coast Pilsner trace back to 2016 at Highland Park Brewery in Los Angeles. Faced with the opportunity to create something unique for a cask festival, brewers Bob Kunz and Tim McDonnell decided to blend their house pilsner with a West Coast IPA. This experimental fusion led to the creation of “Timbo Pils,” a beer that captured the best of both styles. Its success sparked interest among brewers and beer enthusiasts alike, leading to the emergence of the West Coast Pilsner as a recognized style.
Why the Growing Popularity?
The West Coast Pilsner offers a balance that appeals to a wide range of palates. For those who appreciate the initial hoppy intensity of IPAs but seek the lighter body of a pilsner, this style delivers both. Its lower ABV and refreshing profile make it a go-to choice for various occasions, contributing to its rising popularity in the craft beer scene.
